Diltiazem (brand names: Angizem / Angigem / Dizem / Altiazem / Cardizem / Tiamate / Tildiem / Adizem / Viazem / Dilatam / Dilzem / Zandil / Zemtrial / Diltelan / Tiazac) is a calcium channel blocker.
Diltiazem is used for treating:
High blood pressure
Chronic stable angina (chest pain)
Diltiazem may be used only or in conjunction with other medications.
Diltiazem works by soothing and opening up the bloodstream vessels. This allows blood to rotate more freely around the body, decreasing blood pressure and letting the center to perform more economically.
Calcium channel blockers do not change the amount of calcium in your blood or bones.
This drug could be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for additional information.
Follow the directions for using this medication provided by your physician. Take Diltiazem just as aimed.
Diltiazem should be used using a complete glass of water. The tablets must be taken whole rather than chewed.
Your physician will decide what dose of, and for the length of time you should take Diltiazem. This is dependent upon your medical condition and other variables, such as your weight.
Don't cease taking Diltiazem or lower the dosage without checking with your physician. Your doctor may want you to gradually reduce the quantity of Diltiazem you are using before stopping completely.
Take it as soon as you remember, if you forget to take a dosage and then go back to taking it as you would normally. If it is nearly time for your next dosage, cut the dose you missed and consider your next dose when it is due. Do not take a double dose to make up for the dosage that you overlooked.
Store Diltiazem in a cool, dry spot, away from direct warmth and light.
Before taking Diltiazem, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have heart, liver or kidney troubles, or diabetes;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
